Eleven year-old Gregor is having a pretty dull summer in New York City, spending his time looking after his ailing grandmother and his two year-old sister, Boots. When he finds Boots climbing into an air vent in the laundry room, he chases after her, and the two are sucked into a place known as Underland—a bizarre world that is populated by giant talking roaches, spiders, and rats, as well as purple-eyed humans. Gregor is frightened and just wants to get himself and his sister back to safety. But he soon learns that his father, who has long been missing, may actually be in the Underland. Somehow Gregor must summon the courage to play hero and rescue his dad from an army of evil rats.
